چکیده

This paper presents a set of data which compares the potential and limitations of laser microprobe mass spectrometry (TOFLMMS and FT-LMMS) and static secondary ion mass spectrometry (S-SIMS) for inorganic speciation at a microscopical level. In general LMMS yields prominent signals of adduct ions consisting of the intact molecule combined with a stable ion, which allows a direct identification of the analyte. S-SIMS also yields abundant diagnostic signals to specify the molecular composition. However, adduct ions are not always present, which means that the identification often relies on fingerprinting. Results further indicate that the potential and the application area of S-SIMS and FT-LMMS are complementary to one another. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

Laser Microprobe Mass Spectrometry: Possibilities and Limitations

Laser microprobe mass spectrometry (LMMS) offers a great potential for inorganic analysis and speciation as well as for organic structural characterization. This remarkable flexibility makes the results critically dependent on the experimental conditions, however, so an exact description is hard to achieve, since inaccessible local parameters are involved. The paper deals in detail with this as...

Laser Microprobe Mass Spectrometry LASER MICROPROBE MASS SPECTROMETRY: POSSIBILITIES AND LIMITATIONS

Laser microprobe mass spectrometry (LMMS) employs an intense UV pulse from a focused highpower laser to evaporate and ionize a microvolume (% 1 um3) of solid samples at relatively elevated energy density (106-101’ W cmm2). The ions produced by the interaction of photons with the condensed phase are then mass analyzed in a time-of-flight mass spectrometer and yield a complete mass spectrum on ea...

A study of cathodoluminescence and trace element compositional zoning in natural quartz from volcanic rocks: mapping titanium content in quartz.

This article concerns application of cathodoluminescence (CL) spectroscopy to volcanic quartz and its utility in assessing variation in trace quantities of Ti within individual crystals. CL spectroscopy provides useful details of intragrain compositional variability and structure but generally limited quantitative information on element abundances. Microbeam analysis can provide such informatio...

Compositional averaging of backscatter intensities in compounds.

We present high-precision measurements of pure element stable isotope pairs that demonstrate mass has no influence on the backscattering of electrons at typical electron microprobe energies. The traditional prediction of average backscatter intensities in compounds was pragmatically based on elemental mass fractions. Our isotopic measurements establish that this approximation has no physical ba...
